The safety of homeowners is of primary concern to the CSSB. Although no product is fire proof, Certi-Guard® pressure - impregnated fire retardant treated cedar shakes and shingles are available in Class A, B and C roofing systems for use in many areas where the building code requires flame-resistant roofing materials to be used. Please check with your local building official regarding regulations for your area.
Class "A" Fire Retardant Roofing System
This classification uses a Class "B" fire retardant treated product along with a UL (Underwriters Laboratories) rated fire retardant fiberglass cap sheet underlay. A Class "A" roofing system is effective against severe fire exposures. Under such exposures, roof coverings are:
- Not readily flammable
- Afford a fairly high degree of fire protection to the roof deck
- Do not slip from position
- Pose no flying brand hazard

Class "B" Fire Retardant Treatment
Class "B" fire retardant treatment is effective against moderate fire exposures. Under such exposures, roof coverings of this class are not readily flammable, afford a moderate degree of fire protection to the roof deck, do not slip from position and pose no flying-brand hazard.
Class "C" Fire Retardant Treatment
A product that is effective against light fire exposures. Under such exposures, roof coverings of this class are not readily flammable, afford a measurable degree of fire protection to the roof deck, do not slip from position and pose no flying-brand hazard.
The current recommendations by fire experts in forest/urban interface areas advise brush setbacks, firebreaks, and non-combustible or fire resistant building materials.
